Flambeau du Centre have been ejected from the 2022/2023 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

The Burundi Premier League champions suffered a 5-1 defeat to Zamalek SC (Egypt) in the second leg of the second preliminary round on Friday at the Borg El Arab Stadium in Cairo. The Egyptian giants qualified for the group stage on a 6-1 goal aggregate.

Ahmed Sayed Zizo gave Zamalek the lead after only 3 minutes, but Leonard Gakwaya gave the Burundi side some hope with an equalizer after 25 minutes.

Ibrahima Ndiaye restored Zamalek’s lead after 33 minutes before Zizo netted his second of the night to give the home side a 3-1 lead at half time. After recess Zizo netted his third goal of the evening, while Youssef Osama Nabih made it 5-1 after the third official had indicated three added extra minutes.

Zamalek join Mamelodi Sundowns and CR Belouizdad in the group stage, while Flambeau du Centre now dropped to the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.

On Saturday two other teams from the CECAFA region will also be in action. Uganda’s Vipers SC will play away to TP Mazembe, while Al Merreikh (Sudan) play away to Al Ahly Tripoli at the Martyrs of February Stadium.
