Azam, Young Africans qualify for Mapinduzi Cup knock-out stage

Tanzania Premier Leagues sides Azam FC and Young Africans SC have qualified for the knock out stage at the ongoing Mapinduzi Cup in Zanzibar.

Azam defeated Burundi’s Vital ‘O 3-1 in a Group A match, while Young Africans SC saw-off Jamus FC (South Sudan) by the same score margin in Group C tie played on Tuesday at the refurbished Amaan Stadium.

Senegalese striker Alassane Diao netted a brace for Azam FC, while Pascal Msindo scored the third goal. Jean Nzeyimana converted a second half penalty for Vital ‘O.

The win sends Azam top of Group A with 7 points after three matches and straight to the quarter final stage.

In the second match Farid Mussa gave Young Africans SC the lead after 16 minutes, but David Vincent leveled matters for Jamus FC three minutes to the break. With a minute to full time Nickson Kibabage netted the winning goal for Young Africans SC. The Tanzania Premier League reigning champions are also through to the knock out stage after starting the campaign with a convincing 5-0 win against Jamhuri FC (Zanzibar).

Action continues on Wednesday with Rwanda’s APR FC facing JKU SC, while Simba SC battle Singida Fountain Gate FC in Group B matches.

The Mapinduzi Cup is organised by the government of Zanzibar together with the Zanzibar Football Federation (ZFF).

Group B : Simba SC, JKU SC, APR SC, Singida Big Stars FC
