Al Merreikh stop Al Ahli Tripoli in El Obeid

Sudan’s Al Merreikh have stopped visiting Al Ahli Tripoli 2-0 in the first leg of the 2nd round preliminary round of the 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League.

New signing Erick Kambale put the hosts ahead after 29 minutes in a match played at the El Obeid Stadium.

The striker who signed in August 2022 a two year contract from Uganda’s Premier League side, Express FC also scored in the first leg of the same competition away to Djibouti’s AS Arta Solar 7 last month.

Al Ahli Tripoli tried to fight back to get a goal, but the Al Merreikh side defended well. It was Al Jazouli Noah who doubled the lead for the home side after 38 minutes.

After recess the visitors made some tactical changes and pushed forward to try and get goals, but still failed to find them. It’s now advantage Al Merreikh who will travel to Libya determined to get a good result and qualify for the group stage.

On Saturday Tanzania Premier League reigning champions Young Africans SC will host another Sudan team Al Hilal SC at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Three other teams from the CECAFA region will also be in the 1st leg action of the 2nd preliminary round of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League. Uganda Premier League champions Vipers Sc will host 2-time champions TP Mazembe (DR Congo), while Simba SC (Tanzania) play away to Angola’s CD Primeiro de Agosto, and Flambeau du Centre from Burundi will face Egyptian Premier League champions Zamalek in Egypt.
