Al Merreikh suffer defeat to reigning champions Al Ahly

Sudan’s Al Merreikh suffered a 3-2 defeat to Al Ahly in a Group A match of the 2020/2021 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League played on Saturday night in Cairo, Egypt.

Mohamed Sheriff gave the home side an early lead after only two minutes at the Al Salaam Stadium.

Th reigning champions continued to push forward looking for more goals as Al Merreikh defended in numbers. But Sheriff netted his second of the day after 34 minutes.

With two minutes to half time El Merreikh pulled a goal back with Nigerian import Tony Oyamarue scoring. He made no mistake tapping in a well taken Ramadan Agab cross.

The Sudan team returned determined in the second half before they made it 2-2 after 69 minutes. Saadeldin Elsamani made no mistake from close range to level matters.

But the Egyptian side continued to press and create opportunities before Mustafa Karshom netted a own goal after 76 minutes. The reigning champions held on to secure their first maximum points in the group stage to move to second place hehind table leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

Al Merriekh will now prepare to face their arch-rivals Al Hilal on March 11th at the Al Hilal Stadium in Khartoum, Sudan.
