Al Hilal, Al Merreikh placed in same CAF Champions League group

Sudan giants Al Merreikh and Al Hilal have been placed in the same group of the 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League

In the draw conducted this afternoon in Cairo, Egypt saw the two Sudan teams placed in Group A alongside 2016 champions Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa) and reigning champions Al Ahly.

The 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League group stage will be played from 11 February to 2 April 2022.

Pitso Mosimane, the Al Ahly coach who helped conduct the draw however said facing the Sudan teams in their home grounds is not an easy task. “Last year we played away to Al Merreikh and did not win in Sudan,” said Mosimane.

The draw also conducted by Khaled Nassar, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Head of Competitions also saw two Tunisian sides Espérance Sportive de Tunis and E.S Sahel placed in Group C alongside CR Belouizdad (Algeria) and Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy.

Group A: Al Ahly (Egypt), Mamelodi Sundown (South Africa), Al Hilal (Sudan), Al Merreikh (Sudan)

Group B: Raja Casablanca (Morocco), Horoya AC (Guinea), E.S Setifienne (Algeria), AmaZulu FC (South Africa)

Group C: Espérance Sportive de Tunis, E.S Sahel (Tunisia), CR Belouizdad (Algeria), Jwaneng Galaxy (Botswana)

Group B: Wydad Athletic Club (Morrocco), Zamalek (Egypt), Atletico Petroleos, GD Sagrada Esperanca (Angola)
