AFCON QUALIFIER: We must play total football away to Malawi – Onyango

Uganda Cranes skipper Dennis Onyango has called on his teammates to go all out and play total football when they face Malawi on Monday in the last Group B match of the Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The Cranes will need a draw or can afford to suffer any defeat with less than three goals to qualify for the AFCON.

“We must play total football and avoid sitting back because if we do so we could get problems,” added the first choice goalkeeper.

Burkina Faso qualified for the AFCON after holding Uganda Cranes to a goalless draw at the St. Mary’s Stadium, Kitende on Wednesday.

But Onyango who has been part of Uganda’s squad for over 10 years made it clear that their destiny is clearly in their hands and they will need no favors from anyone. “We can still do it in Malawi because we know what to do,” he added.

The Stallions of Burkina Faso lead the group with 9 points, while Uganda are second with 8 points. Malawi have 7 points and South Sudan 3.

Uganda’s team is expected to fly out this weekend on a chartered Uganda Airlines flight.
