2021 AFCON QUALIFIERS: Uganda Cranes beat Malawi to lead Group B
Uganda Cranes have taken charge of Group B in the on-going 2021 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers after their convincing 2-0 home win over Malawi on Sunday. Emmanuel Arnold Okwi scored the first goal after 29 minutes before Fahad Bayo netted the second after 66 minutes.
The visitors also had Richard Mbulu’s shot saved by Uganda’s goalkeeper and skipper Denis Onyango.
“I am happy that we have comfortably won the first game at home in this campaign. The defenders have also been very disciplined today,” said Uganda’s new coach Jonathan Mckinstry after the match.
Uganda Cranes now lead Group B with four points and a better goal difference that Burkina Faso who picked a 2-1 away win on Sunday to South Sudan in a game played at the Khartoun Stadium.
Veteran Atistide Bance scored put the visitors in the lead after 20 minutes before adding the second 20 minutes later.
In the second half South Sudan’s Bright Star battled hard and pulled back one goal through Jose Kuch Nyaur in added time.
Rwanda’s Amavubi on Sunday suffered their second defeat in the 2021 Afcon qualifiers to Cameroon 1-0 in Kigali.
Ngoumo Ngamaleu netted the lone goal at the Kigali Stadium to condemn Rwanda to their second loss.
On Monday two teams from the Council of East and central African Football Association (Cecafa) regions will also be in action. Fresh from holding Egypt to a 1-1 draw in Alexandria the Harambee Stars of Kenya will host Togo, while Burundi also host Morocco.
Taifa Stars of Tanzania will battle Libya on Tuesday in Tunisia. Skipper Mbwana Samatta and teammates will be all out to try and collect more maximum points after their 2-1 win over Equatorial Guinea on Wednesday. Ethiopia will face a tough test against Ivory Coast on Tuesday as well.
