2020 CHAN QUALIFIERS: Rwanda, Uganda register vital away wins

Rwanda’s Amavubi and Uganda Cranes moved closer to qualification for the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) after picking important away wins. Handled by interim coach Abdalla Mubiru Uganda Cranes stopped Burundi in Bujumbura 3-0, while Rwanda picked a 1-0 win away in Ethiopia.

The biggest surprise was Sudan’s 1-0 win in Dar es Salaam against Taifa Stars on Sunday with Yasir Mozamil Mohamed netting the all important goal after 61 minutes.

At the Intwari Stadium in Bujumbura on Saturday Viane Sekajugo gave visiting Uganda a first half lead before the KCCA FC duo of Muzamiru Mutyaba and Mustafa Kizza also got their names on the score sheet.

“We are happy winning away from home. But we must keep working hard because there is a second leg to play in Kampala next month,” said Uganda’s interim coach Mubiru.

For Rwanda striker Ernest Sugira was the hero when he left the fans at Mekelle Stadium shocked with a beautiful overhead kick that earned the Amavubi a vital win.

Three teams from the Cecafa region will join 13 other teams from other region for the next year’s CHAN competition to take place in Cameroon. The tournament is strictly for players who are ply their trade in their country’s own domestic leagues.
