10-man Mamelodi Sundowns sink Al Hilal in Khartoum

South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns FC have humbled hosts Al Hilal SC 4-2 in a Group A match of the 2021/2022 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League played in Khartoum.

The Sudan Premier League side went into the match in need of a win to keep their hopes alive to make it to the knock out stage.

But Peter Shalulile made sure he gave the 2016 champions the League after only 2 minutes before the home side settled at the Al Hilal Stadium. The visitors had Kenyan international Brian Mandela Onyango sent off after only 11 minutes.

Mamelodi Sundowns who are unbeaten in the Group stage so far doubled their lead after 30 minutes with Teboho Mokoena’s strike.

After recess Al Hilal pulled one goal back through Yasir Mozamil Mohamed El Jayeb who placed a well taken shot past Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse.

But Thapelo Morena made sure he netted a brace later to give the South African side a 4-1 lead. Osman Mokhtar Elnour Eltayib scored Al Hilal’s second goal with on three added minutes.

Mamelodi Sundowns lead Group A with 13 points, while reigning champions Al Ahly who beat another Sudan team Al Merreikh yesterday are second on 7 points.

While Al Merreikh cannot make it to the quarter final stage, Al Hilal can only qualify if they beat Al Ahly 3-0 on more in their last Group match.
