Zambia fight back to hold Uganda in COSAFA U-17 Women’s Championship
A late goal by Sherry Masomo was enough to help Zambia pick a draw against Uganda in the opening match of the 2019 COSAFA U-17 Women’s Championship on Friday.
Uganda, the only guest side invited for the tournament took the lead with a penalty converted by skipper Juliet Nalukenge at the François Xavier Stadium in Mauritius.
But the Zambian team fought back strongly to level matters after 86 minutes. Uganda’s goalkeeper Daphine Nanyenga with a blunder let Masomo shot slip through her hands for Zambia to level matters.
The Zambian team looked comfortable on the ball, although Uganda’s team defended well.
Uganda’s coach Ayub Khalifa said the girls played well as a unit. “We should have won the game, but a blunder by our goalkeeper gave Zambia chance to score. We shall continue working hard,” added Khalifa.
The second Group A match later on Friday will see Comoros face Mauritius. Uganda, the representatives from the Cecafa zone will return to action on September 22nd against Mauritius.
Group B has Seychelles, Madagascar, South Africa and Botswana.
