Women’s tournament 2022 has been a huge success – Gecheo

The Executive Director of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA), Auka Gecheo has said the regional women’s tournament which concludes on Saturday has been a huge success.

Eight teams from the CECAFA region have been tussling it out in the CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2022 at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru.

On Saturday Uganda Crested Cranes will face Burundi in the final, while Tanzania take on Ethiopia in the playoff for third place.

To reach the final Uganda Crested Cranes needed a extra time goal to edge Ethiopia 1-0 in the first semi-final tie, while Burundi recovered from a goal down to stop Tanzania 2-1.

Gecheo thanked all the teams for the good display through out the competition. “Even the teams that lost gave their best. We have witnessed really good games and the four teams that reached the semis deserved to be there because they played very good football and exhibited hgh level of tactical capacity,” added Gecheo.

The CECAFA Executive Director reasoned that the tournament has provided good testing ground for both Burundi and Uganda who will play in the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) that takes place next month in Morocco.

“We provided a a good environment to compete and Uganda and Burundi will have five games under their belt that puts them in good shape ahead of the tournament in Morocco,” explained Gecheo.

He also praised the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) for the good organization which provided a good field for competition. Gecheo also praised the people of Jinja have been good hosts. “This tournament has been a huge success,” he added.

The tournament attracted Uganda, Burundi, Tanzania, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Rwanda, Zanzibar and Djibouti.
