CAF WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE QUALIFIERS
Wanyonyi nets four goals as Kenya’s Vihiga Queens humble Yei Joint Stars
Striker Violet Wanyonyi netted four goals to help Vihiga Queens thrash Yei Joint Stars 11-0 in a Group B match played today at the on-going CECAFA Zonal qualifier for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League.
Wanyonyi scored two goals in each half as the Kenyan side run riot against the South Sudan Women’s Premier League Champions at the Kasarani Stadium.
The match was also graced by the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) President, Wallace Karia who arrived today.
It was a one sided affair with Vihiga scoring six goals after 45 minutes with Wanyonyi and Maurine Achieng scoring a brace each, while Tereza Obuntu Engesha and Jentrix Shikangwa Milimu also got their names on the score sheet.
In the second half the Yei Joint Stars tried to reorganize their defending department, but failed to stop the Vihiga Queens attacking line.
After 50 minutes Engesha headed in to make it 7-0 before Yei Joint Stars were awarded a penalty after their player was brought down in the box. Yei Joint Stars’ Luka Alworonga Debora Stephen stepped forward, but her penalty kick was saved by Vihinga Queens’ goalkeeper Lilian Awuor.
The Kenyan side continued to dictate the pace of the game and scored two more goals through Wanyonyi, and one each by Engesha, Achieng and Shikangwa Milimu. The win sends Vihiga Queens to second place before they face Zanzibar’s New Generations FC in the last Group B match.
“We are determined to keep improving because we want this trophy to remain in Kenya,” said Wanyonyi after the match.
