Ugandan President Museveni promises to support CECAFA
The Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has promised to financially support one of the tournaments on the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) calendar.
Museveni said this on Friday at the StateHouse in Entebbe during the visit of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) President, Dr. Patrice Motsepe.
Dr. Motsepe was accompanied by the Ugandan Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon Anita Among, FUFA President Moses Hassim Magogo and the CECAFA Prsident Wallace Karia among others.
During his speech Karia thanked Museveni for the continuously support he has given football and requested that he also supports one of the CECAFA tournaments. Museveni answered in affirmative that he will support one of the CECAFA tournaments.
President went ahead to ask the CECAFA boss how much support they would require for one of the tournaments. Museveni also made it clear that they are yet to make real support to football.
The CAF President, Dr. Motsepe thanked the government of Uganda and FUFA under the leadership of Moses Hassim Magogo for the work they are doing in developing football in the country.
he also made it clear that he will support Uganda and Tanzania if they put in a joint bid to host the 2027 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“I was told that Uganda and Tanzania are keen to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in these two beautiful countries. As the President of CAF, I have to support all the 54 Member Associations equally and must say that I would personally not only just welcome but encourage a joint hosting bid between these two countries because it will make a huge contribution to football development in Uganda and Tanzania. This region (CECAFA) has not hosted Africa Cup of Nations before and it would be a good move to both Uganda and Tanzania not only in promoting football development but also other areas like tourism, investment and trade,” added Dr. Motsepe who also visited other CECAFA members Ethiopia and South Sudan last week.
Already the Rwanda President, Paul Kagame supports the regional Kagame Club Championship, while the Tanzania President Samia Suluhu Hassan also came on board starting last year to support the CECAFA Women’s Champions League.
