Uganda suffer defeat to Ghana in FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier

The Black Princesses of Ghana have defeated hosts Uganda 2-1 in the the first leg clash in the third round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Coach Ben Forkuo’s team started the match on a high pushing forward to try and get an early goal at the St. Marys Stadium, Kitende.

After 19 minutes a defensive blunder gave Salamatu Abdulal space to give Ghana the lead. She run into the box and lobbed the ball past Uganda’s goalkeeper Daphine Nyayenga.

But Fuazia Najjemba had her shot punched out for a corner after 21 minutes by the Ghana goalkeeper. Later Doris Boaduwaa had a chance to increase Ghana’s lead, but he close shot was parried away by Nyayenga.

Three minutes into the second half Ghana increased their lead with Grace Animah curving in a free kick.

The home side who defended for most of the match later pulled back one goal. Captain Najjemba converted a penalty after 85 minutes.

“ I am happy that we picked a win away from home. Now we need to go back and prepare well for the return leg,” said Ghana’s coach Forkuo after the match.

Tomorrow will witness a clash of CECAFA team when Tanzania face Ethiopia at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar in the first leg of the third round of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

Two teams from Africa will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 to be hosted in Costa Rica from August 10 to August 28.
