Uganda Hippos edge Senegal to qualify for semis in African Games

The Uganda Hippos have stormed the semi-final stage at the on-going 13th Edition of the African Games in Ghana.

Handled by former International Morley Byekwaso Ochama the Hippos edged Senegal 1-0 in a Group B match played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday night.

Allan Oyirworth netted from the spot after 27 minutes after Arafat Usama had been brought down in the box After 26 minutes.

The Hippos created many more scoring opportunities, but failed to make them count, as the opponents also had their opportunities at Uganda’s goal mouth.

Uganda qualifies for the semi-final stage after also seeing off Nigeria 2-1 in the first match. “We are very happy that the team is playing well and has advanced to the next stage. We need to keep improving as a team because we now het to the knock out stage,” says Uganda’s coach Ochama.

In the second Group B match played on Monday, CECAFA’s second representatives South Sudan suffered a 1-0 defeat Nigeria.

After the South Sudan team had closed out Nigeria’s attacks, Sadiq Isiyaka scored from the spot after 80 minutes to ensure the West Africans picked maximum points. It was South Sudan’s second defeat after losing 1-0 to Senegal in their opening match.

Uganda will face South Sudan on March 15th, while Senegal battle Nigeria in the last Group B matches at the event.

Later tonight two teams from the CECAFA Zone Uganda and Ethiopia will clash in the women’s category, while Ghana face Tanzania. In their first matches Uganda and Tanzania drew 1-1, while Ethiopia fell 1-0 to Ghana.
