Uganda eliminates Tanzania in 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier

Uganda are through to the next round of the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifier. On Saturday the hosts humbled Tanzania 5-0 in the return leg of the qualifiers played the the Lugogo Stadium in Kampala.

The big win saw Uganda qualify on a 6-2 goal aggregate where they will now face Cameroon who ejected Sao Tome and Principe.

Winger Margaret Kunihira gave Uganda the lead after 43 minutes with a hard shot past the Tanzanian goalkeeper Aishi Ismail. But Tanzanians also had a chance earlier through Joyce Meshak whose shot hit the woodwork.

After 58 minutes Fauzia Najjemba scored to make it 2-0 for Uganda from a free kick. The Tanzanian team tried to fight back to score, but found the Ugandan defenders strong.

Later Grace Aluka also scored, while skipper Juliet Nalukenge netted a brace to give Uganda a comfortable 5-0 win. “I am happy that we have eliminated Tanzania that also eliminated us in the Women’s U-20 FIFA World Cup qualifier,” said Nalukenge.

Tanzania’s coach Bakari Shime said although his players did not take their chances, they did not play well in the second half. “I think Uganda also used some played who looked overage,” reasoned Shime.
