Uganda Crested Cranes, Burundi qualify for semi final stage

Hosts Uganda and Burundi have qualified for the semi final stage at the on-going CECAFA Senior Women’s Challenge Cup 2022.

The two teams picked wins in the Group A matches played today at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru to make sure they qualify for the knock-out stage.

It was Uganda Crested Cranes who started the day in style with a big 5-0 win against Djibouti.

Aisha Nantongo gave Uganda the lead after 15 minutes, before defender Margret Namirimu made it 2-0 two minutes to the interval. In the second half Sandra Nabweteme, substitute Phiona Nabbumba and Fazila Ikwaput added more goals for the hosts.

Uganda’s head coach George Lutalo praised hos players for the big win that sends them to the semi finals. “I am glad that we have scored five goals and not conceded again,” said Lutalo.

In the second Group A match Burundi defeated Rwanda team 2-1. Sandrine Niyonkuru scored the opening goal for Burundi in the 13th minute, before Zawadi Usanase scored for Rwanda to make it 1-1 after 37 minutes.

Niyonkuru later converted a penalty in the 79th minute after Rwanda’s Joseyne Mukantaganira had brought down substitute Aneilla Uwimana in the box.

Yussuf Mossi, the CECAFA Competitions Director said they are happy with the level of competition they have so far witnessed in the tournament. “We expect more competitive matches as the tournament progresses,” added Mossi.

On Saturday Ethiopia will face on Tanzania in the first Group B match of the day, before South Sudan face Zanzibar.
