Uganda, Burundi book second round slots in WAFCON 2022 qualifiers
Uganda and Burundi have qualified for the second round of the 2022 TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers.
The Uganda Crested Cranes eliminated Ethiopia, while Burundi saw-off Eritrea in matches played today.
Hosts Ethiopia defeated Uganda 2-0 at the Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa, but lost 2-1 in penalty shoot-outs. Senaf Wakuma and skipper Loza Abera netted for Ethiopia to send the match to penalty shoot-outs since Uganda had also won the first leg by the same margin.
In Ngozi at the Urukundo Stadium, Joelle Bukuru scored the lone goal for Burundi against Eritrea to qualify on a 6-0 goal aggregate.
Uganda will now face Kenya in the second round of the qualifiers, while Burundi will face Djibouti advanced after Rwanda pulled out.
Sudan who lost their first leg 14-0 to Algeria are yet to play the return leg after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) postponed the match because of political tension in Sudan.
The other teams that have already qualified for the second round include; Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa, Tunisia, Equatorial Guinea, Togo, Gabon, Cameroon, Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Guinea Bissau and Burkina Faso.
