Uganda beat Senegal to go top of group B

Uganda Cranes picked their first win in a Group B match at the on-going TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022 on Wednesday night.

Coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s team stopped 10-man Senegal 1-0 in a match played at the 19th May 956 Stadium in Annaba, Algeria on Wednesday night.

Skipper Milton Karisa netted the lone goal after 33 minutes against the run of play. But this came after Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi had saved Ousmane Diouf’s  penalty kick earlier .

Moussa Ndiaye was fouled in the box an the Tunisian referee pointed to the spot. But Uganda Cranes in-form goalkeeper Alionzi was up to the task as he dived the right side to stop the penalty.

After recess the Teranga Lions who won their opening match 1-0 against Cote D’Ivoire came all out trying to level matters, but the Ugandan defenders stood firm. The referee later awarded Uganda a penalty, but he was called to check the VAR screen, before it was cancelled.

After 83 minutes Senegal’s substitute Libasse Ngom was sent off for a serious foul. But the Terenga Lions still kept pushing forward in search of a goal. The match was also watched by CECAFA Executive Director, Auka Gecheo..

“This has been a sweet win. But we need need to keep working hard ahead of our last group match against Cote D’Ivoire on Sunday,” said a happy Uganda Cranes coach Sredojevic after the match.

In an earlier match DR Congo and Cote D’Ivoire settled for a goalless draw at the same Stadium. Cote D’Ivoire had Mohamed Zougrana sent-off. The group will be decided on Sunday with the best two teams qualifying for the quarter final stage. Uganda Cranes will face Cote D’Ivoire, while Senegal battle DR Congo.
