U-20 AFCON qualifiers set to kick-off in Sudan

The TotalEnergies U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers for the CECAFA Zone will kick off today with two matches on card at the Al Hilal Stadium in Khartoum, Sudan.

Djibouti will battle Burundi in the opening Group A match, and after hosts Sudan take on South Sudan in the second match.

Dr. Mutasim Gafaar, President of the Sudan Football Association (SFA) made it clear that they are prepared to host a successful tournament. “We are happy that we were accepted to host this tournament and we thank the government of Sudan for all the support as well,” says Gafaar.

The reigning champions Uganda Kobs will be in action on Saturday against Tanzania in the only Group B match scheduled.

Yusuf Mossi, the CECAFA Competitions Director says apart from Ethiopia who will arrive on Sunday, all the other teams have jetted in. “ “We are happy with all the arrangements by the Sudan Football Association and all the teams are happy,” added Mossi.

The best two teams from each group will qualify for the semi final stage, while the teams that make the final will automatically qualify for the U-20 AFCON 2023 to be held in Egypt.

Group A: Sudan, Djibouti, South Sudan, Burundi

Group B: Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia
