The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the cancellation of the U-17 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Morocco was meant to host the tournament March 13-31st in three cities. Twelve nations were set to tussle it out in the tournament.

But on Monday the CAF Emergency Committee met in Rabat, Morocco and decided the tournament is cancelled. Tanzania and Uganda who qualified to represent the Cecafa Zone already had their teams in Morocco preparing for the start of the competition.

The Committee noted that taking into account the cancellation by FIFA of the Under-17 World Cup for which the U-17 Afcon CAN was no longer qualifying, it was also important that the event is cancelled because of the resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic, increased restrictions on international travel and uncertainty about the evolution of the situation.

“Following the cancellation of the tournament, FUFA will now make plans to fly the team back home,” said Ahmed Hussein, the Communications Manager of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa).
