Sudan are top of Group B after picking a crucial 2-0 away win to Mauritania on Thursday night the on-going FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers

With several challenges including political unrest back home to training away from home for over a year now, the Sudan team has continued to improve under the watchful eyes of Kwasi Appiah from Ghana.

Saifeldin Bakhit gave Sudan the lead after 15 minutes, and Aly Abeid added an own goal after 29 minutes in-front of the home crowd in Nouakchott.

“We played really well and should have scored more goals because we created many chances. But we continue to work hard and prepare for our next match against South Sudan next week,” said Appiah.

The win pushed Sudan to 7 points, while Senegal who settled for a 1-1 home draw against DR Congo are second with 5 points, and DR Congo 4 points.

In the other matches played Ethiopia picked a goalless draw away to Guinea Bissau to take their tally to 2 points and fifth on the Group A log ahead of Djibouti who have collected no point. Egypt who beat Burkina Faso 2-1 on Thursday top the Group with 9 points.

Rwanda were also unlucky to suffer a 1-0 defeat to hosts Benin in a match played at the Felix H. Boigny Stadium in Ivory Coast. The Amavubi who will next face Lesotho on June 11th have 4 points just like Benin.

Action continues today for teams in the CECAFA Zone with Uganda hosting Botswana in a Group G match at the refurbished Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, while Kenya battle Burundi in a Group F match to be played in Lilongwe, Malawi. The Somalia national team will also be in action away to Mozambique in a Group G tie.
