Sudan make good start in 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers

Sudan made a good start to the 2021 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers with a 4-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe on Wednesday night in Khartoum. The home side made use of the red card to Sao Tome and Principe’s goalkeeper Aldar Cravid to score many goals in the Group C match.

Ramadan Agba, Ahmed Hamed Eltetsh, Mohamed Al-Rasheed and an own goal by Jordao Diogo were enough to see Sudan take the lead in Group C.

The other representatives from the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (Cecafa) Uganda Cranes managed to pick a point away to Burkina Faso in a in their goalless draw last night in a Group B match.

It was also new coach Jonathan McKinstry’s first big game in-charge of Uganda since he was appointed last month. In his first game in an international friendly match Uganda beat Ethiopia 1-0 in an away game.

In another Group B match South Sudan lost 1-0 away to Malawi Flames at the Kamuzu Stadium. Gabadinho Mhango netted the lone goal after 68 minutes.

“We need to go back to the drawing board and sharpen the attack because we miss several chances. But general our system of play was good and the players battled well,” said South Sudan coach Ashu Cyprian Besong after the game.

Burundi who played in the 2019 Afcon also suffered a 2-0 defeat in a group E match away to Central African Republic.

On Thursday Kenya’s Harambee Stars will play away to Egypt, while Taifa Stars of Tanzania host Equatorial Guinea on Friday and Madagascar battle Ethiopia.
