Stephen Debora Luka Alworonga netted the lone goal to hand South Sudan their first win at the on-going CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship 2022.

The South Sudan striker beat Zanzibar’s goalkeeper Yassin Zuwena with a low shot after 80 minutes in a Group B match played at the FUFA Technical Centre in Njeru, Uganda on Saturday.

The Bright Starlets dominated play, but lacked the sharpness at goal.  Shilene Margaret Booysen, the South Sudan team coach said she was happy with the performance of the team.

“I am happy that my players gave their best and managed to get a win,” added Booysen whose team will now have to stop table leaders Ethiopia if they hope to qualify for the semi final stage.

Earlier Tanzania forced Ethiopia to a 2-2 draw in another Group B match. Geinore Loza Abera, the Ethiopia team captain put her team in the lead after 8 minutes.

But Tanzania’s hard working forward Opa Clement made it 1-1 in the first half. Mesay Temesgen Tanga put Ethiopia back in the lead, but defender Enekia Kasonga Lunyamila netted the equalizer for Tanzania late in the second half.

On Sunday Rwanda will take on Djibouti in a Group A match, after which table leaders Uganda Crested Cranes will face Burundi.
