The Bright Star of South Sudan has booked a slot for the group stage of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 qualifiers.

South Sudan defeated Djibouti 1-0 in the return leg of the preliminary round of the qualifiers played at the St. Marys Stadium, Kitende in Uganda on Sunday.

Peter Chol volleyed in the lone goal after 55 minutes to ensure South Sudan qualified on a 5-2 goal aggregate after they won the first leg 4-2 last week.

Djibouti’s lead striker Sauel Teidayo Feargod kept the South Sudan defenders busy, but failed to find the net. “ I am happy that y tea won the two legs. We need to continue building the tea ahead of the qualifiers for the group stage,” added South Sudan’s head coach Stefano Cusin.

Another CECAFA member Somalia suffered a 2-1 away defeat to Eswatini to bow out on a 5-1 goal aggregate.

South Sudan, Lesotho, Eswatini together with Sao Tome & Principe have qualified for the group stage of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers.
