South Sudan conclude 4-Nations tourney with defeat to Gambia

The South Sudan national football team, Bright Star lost their third match in the 4-Nations tournament that ended in the Moroccan town of El Jadida on Tuesday.

Gambia, who qualified for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) stopped South Sudan 2-1 in the match played at the Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida.

Assan Ceesay converted two penalties in the first half for the Gambia team, while Dani Lual netted a late goal after 89 minutes for the Bright Star.

The South Sudan team started the mini tournament with a 1-1 draw against another AFCON bound team Sierra Leone, before losing 2-0 to Morocco’s CHAN team.

General Augustino Maduot Parek, President of the South Sudan Football Association (SSFA) said that the tournament came at the right time for the new coach Stefano Cusion to be able to assess his players.

“We are happy that the national team had the chance to feature in this tournament and played against three good teams,” added Parek.

The South Sudan national team is also expected to play another international friendly next month.
