Somalia silence Zimbabwe in FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifier
The Ocean Stars of Somalia have made history by defeating Zimbabwe 1-0 in the first leg match of the preliminary round of the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifier. Playing on a neutral ground in Djibouti on Thursday the newly assembled team of mostly foreign based players were composed and played as a team.
A well timed headed ball by Anwar Sayid Cali in the 86th minute was enough to see Somalia win their first ever FIFA World Cup qualifier match.
“I am happy that the players gave their best. It is good to win and now we shift attention to the return leg,” said Somalia’s head coach Bashir Hayford.
In an earlier match played another team from the Cecafa region Sudan picked a 3-1 away win over Chad. Ramadan Agab netted a hat-trick, while Ezechiel Ndousassel converted a late penalty for the hosts.
