Six CECAFA teams drawn in 2020 African Women’s Cup of Nations qualifiers

Six teams from the Council of East ans Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) region have been drawn in the qualifiers for the 2020 African Women’s Cup of Nations (AFCON). The draws conducted on Wednesday in Cairo, Egypt saw a record 36 teams entered.

Kenya Starlets, the 2019 CECAFA Senior Women’s Challenge Cup winners will face arch-rivals Kilimanjaro Queens of Tanzania in the first leg, while Uganda Crested Cranes face Burundi. Ethiopia will battle new entrants in women football Djibouti.

According to CAF, the first round ties will take place in April 2020, with the first and second leg ties coming between April 6 and 14. The second round matches are scheduled to be played between June 1 and 9, 2020.

Defending champions Nigeria and seven other nations including Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Morocco, Mali, Ghana, South Africa and Cote d’Ivoire have been given byes into the second round.

The winner between Burundi and Uganda will take on Cameroon in the second round, while the winner between Ethiopia and Djibouti face Morocco. The winning team between Kenya and Tanzania will take on the winner between DR Congo and Sao Tome at the next stage.
