Abera leads CBE FC to Champions League qualifiers

Ethiopia’s star player Loza Abera will lead Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC as they seek to win the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Natiosn (WAFCON) which kicks-off in the Tanzanian capital Dar es Salaam on Sunday.

“After finishing second last year we are now very determined to perform better and win the trophy. The team is motivated and prepared to win the trophy and qualify for the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations,” says the skipper Abera.

The Ethiopian Women’s Premier League champions arrived in Dar es Salaam this afternoon ahead of the tournament which kicks off on Sunday and ends on August 27th. Commercial Bank of Ethiopia is placed in Group A alongside Warriors Queens FC (Zanzibar), FOFILA FF (Burundi) and AS Kigali WFC (Rwanda).

Uganda’s She Corporate FC will open the tournament with a match against Yei Joint Stars FC (South Sudan), while Simba Queens FC (Tanzania) take on Garde Republicaine FC (Djibouti) in the second Group B match to be played the same day.

Yussf Mossi, the CECAFA Competitions Director told Cecafaonline that they expect a very competitive tournament this year compared to last year. “Teams have had enough time to prepare and we expect very tough matches,” said Mossi. He added that the best two teams from each group will qualify for the semi finals to be played on August 24th, while the finals will take place August 27th at the Benjmin Mkapa Stadium.

Last year’s runners-up Commercial Bank of Ethiopia FC, Warriors Queens FC (Zanzibar), FOFILA FF (Burundi) and AS Kigali WFC (Rwanda) are the other teams that are placed in Group A.
