Kenyan international Okumu joins KAA Gent in Belgium

Harambee Stars defender Joseph Okumu has signed a four year contract with Belgium giants KKA Gent.

The 24-year old defender who also featured for Kenya at the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt signed the contract on Sunday.

Okumu who had attracted interest from teams in France and Scotland moved from Swedish side IF Elfsborg. He joined the Swedish side after featuring in the AFCON in 2019.

The defender who is comfortable as a centre back has played club football for Kenya’s Chemelil Sugar, Free State Stars (South Africa) and AFC Ann Arbor (USA).

He signed for USL Championship side Real Monarchs in 2018 before moving to Elfsborg in 2019.

Okumu is expected to be one of the starting defenders for Harambee Stars when they start their campaign in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers in September. Kenya is grouped alongside Uganda, Rwanda and Mali.
