Kenyan International Akumu happy to join South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs

Kenyan international Anthony Akumu has said joining South Africa’s against Kaizer Chiefs is a great step in his professional career. The midfielder was unveiled on Wednesday as the first signing of Kaizer Chiefs on a three-year contract. The 27-old player joined from Zambian club Zesco United.

“I am happy to join Kaizer Chiefs and I am ready to work hard for the success of the team. I have learnt that I am the first Kenyan at Chiefs and it is a good thing. I now need to perform well and show I’m capable of doing for the team,” added Akumu who is the first Kenyan to sign for the club.

The South African giants had to first terminate the contract of Ghanaian midfielder James Kotei (the fifth foreign-contracted player in the squad) to make way for Akumu.

Akumu has been a mainstay in the ZESCO side for some years now and was nominated for the Zambia Super League Player of the Season last campaign as he helped his side to the league title and qualification for the CAF Champions League.

Other players from the CECAFA region who have featured for Kaizer Cheifs before include; David Obua, Sula matovu, Ivan Bukenya and Godfrey Walusimbi (Uganda).
