Karuka, Biruk voted best players in CAF African Schools Football Championship CECAFA Zone
Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School’s Zainabu Dotto Karuka and Kabe Buzuna Biruk (Geda Robel, Ethiopia) were voted best players at the just concluded CAF African Schools Championship for the CECAFA Zone.
Tanzania’s Fountain Gate Dodoma and Royal Giant High School emerged champions in the girls and boys category respectively when the Championship climaxed on Sunday at the Azam Stadium in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
Fountain Gate Dodoma dominated in the Awards for girls with Karuka taking the best player’s Award, Allic Nelson Nechemia taking the best goalkeeper’s gong, while Winifrida Hubert Gerald was the top scorer with six goals.
“This is a dream come true for me. It is a good feeling to score many goals and help Fountain Gate School win the title,” said the girls top scorer Winfrida Hubert Gerald after the tournament.
Karuka, the best player in the girls category thanked CAF for starting this tournament for schools. “This is a very good stage for us to show our talent. I am happy that we shall represent our School and Tanzania in the major tournament,” added Karuka.
In the boys category another (Geda Robel, Ethiopia) player Dawit Biruk Bekel was voted best goalkeeper, while Libya Primary School (South Sudan) player Ajo Minari Alex Lomoro picked the top scorer’s Award with 7 goals.
Lomoro was also excited about winning the top scorer’s Award and thanked CAF and CECAFA for organizing the Championship. “This tournament has motivated me to keep working hard,” added Libya Primary School’s Lomoro.
Djibouti’s CEM Boulaus and Aljeel Al Genina (Sudan) picked the Fair Play Awards for the girls and boys category respectively.
Her Excellency Ambassador Dr. Pindi Chana, the Tanzanian Minister of Culture, Arts and Sports was the guest of honor, CECAFA President Wallace Karia, his Vice Isayas Jira Bosho and the CAF Director of Member Associations, Sarah Mukuna presented the Awards.
The top three teams in each category received medals and cash prices courtesy of the Motsepe Foundation which will go towards development in their respective schools. The winners in each category got a cash prize of US$100,000, the runners up US$75,000 and the third placed teams US$50,000.
