Tanzania’s JKT Queens FC have stopped Vihiga Queens 1-0 to finish top of Group B in the on-going CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers – CECAFA Zone.

An own goal by Ruth Khasokha after 48 minutes was enough to settle the contest at the FUFA technical Center in Njeru, Uganda.

The two teams went into the deciding match tied at 6 points a piece.

After the first half where Vihiga Queens missed some good scoring chances through Bertha Omita and skipper Merceline Wayodi, the JKT Queens returned a changed side after the interval.

But 11 minutes into the second half Vihiga Queens key defender Phoeby Okech Owiti was sent off for a second bookable offence.  After 66 minutes Vihiga Queens substitute Janet Moraa Bundi came close to finding a goal, but her effort missed by inches.

Charles Okere Okoth, the Vihiga Queens FC head coach said that the own goal and the red card affected them. ” We shall prepare well ahead of the semi final match, ” added Okoth whose team lifted the Zonal title in 2021. The JKT Queens coach Esther Fredy Chaburuma praised her players for the hard work. ” I am happy we have topped the group because that was our plan, ” added Chaburuma.

The second Group B match played at the Omondi Stadium in Kampala saw Rwanda’s AS Kigali Women FC defeat New Generation FC (Zanzibar) 2-0. Libelle Nabagwire and Dorothee Mukeshmana scored two second half goals for the AS Kigali Women FC.

Group A matches will continue on August 21st with Buja Queens (Burundi) facing Yei Joint Stars (South Sudan), while Ugandan champions Kampala Queens take on FAD FC (Djibouti).
