Tanzania’s Taifa Stars will play the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) without key defender Aggrey Morris.

The experienced defender picked up a knee injury few days ago during an international friendly against Egypt that ended in a 1-0 loss in Cairo.

“It is unfortunate Aggrey Morris cannot make the team because of injury. This is part of football,” said Wallace Karia, President of Tanzania’s Football Association (TFF) on Friday.

The Taifa Stars will open their campaign against star studded Senegal on Sunday in a Group C match to be played at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo.

Nigerian legend Emmanuel Amunike who guided Tanzania to qualify for AFCON since their last appearance in 1980 said they have what it takes to perform well.

“We need to plan well for every game. But the opening game against Senegal will be very important for us to get something from it,” added the 1994 African Player of the Year.

The Taifa Stars who will be led by Belgian based in-form striker Mbwana Ally Samatta will battle Kenya on June 27th in their second Group C game before winding up against Algeria on July 1st at the Al-Salam Stadium.
