The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia are the first team to book a place in the semi final stage at the on-going CECAFA Zonal qualifier of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League.
Commercial Bank of Ethiopia kept a 100% winning run after thrashing Zanzibar’s New Generations FC 10-1 in a Group B match played at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi this afternoon.
After only 8 minutes Medina Busser put the Ethiopian champions ahead after chipping the advancing New Generations’ goalkeeper Yasin Zuena. It was also Busser’s fourth goal of the tournament.
Skipper Geinore Loza later had her shot saved by the New Generations goalkeeper, before the Zanzibari side leveled matters after 18 minutes. Husna Mpanja benefited from a poor clearance and shot past the Central Bank of Ethiopia FC goalkeeper.
However, after conceding a goal, the Ethiopian side pushed more players upfront before Loza scored two quick goals, and Aregah Kalsa Tadesse added the fourth through a free kick to go 4-1 at half time.
In the second half the New Generations team threw more players at the back, but Central Bank of Ethiopia earned a penalty after 47 minutes.
Loza was brought down by Happy Mroni in the box, and the Burundian referee pointed straight to the spot. Loza stepped up and slotted the penalty in to make it 5-1.
But Loza, the 2020/2021 Ethiopian Women’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) was not done yet as she netted her fourth goal of the day. She dashed from almost the centre in a solo effort and slotted the ball past the New Generations goalkeeper after 58 minutes to make it 6-1.
As the Ethiopian team dominated play substitute Emeber Adisu Asfaw later got her name on the score sheet after 75 minutes. Medina Busser netted two more goals to bring her tally six in the tournament. The skipper Loza stepped up again and converted a penalty after 87 minutes to make it 10-1.
Loza and Busser who netted five and three goals respectively on the day received two balls for scoring a hat-trick each. ” I am very happy to score five goals today and we are glad we have now won two games,” said Loza after the match.
