Tanzania humble Djibouti in U-20 AFCON Qualifiers

Hosts Tanzania returned to winning ways with a 7-0 humbling of Djibouti in their second Group A match at the on-going TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) CECAFA Qualifiers in Tanzania.

After losing their opening match 2-1 to Kenya, the hosts made sure they put their house together and sent a strong message in the match played today at the KMC Stadium.

Valentino Mashaka netted a second half hat-trick, while Sabri Kondo also scored two goals. Jammy Jammy and Nickson Mosha also got their names on the score sheet as the Tanzanian side run riot against Djibouti who also lost their opening match 3-1 to Sudan.

Charle Boniface Mkwasa, the Tanzania head coach said he was happy with the display of his boys who also showed hunger to score many goals. “I am happy that we have recovered to win with a big score and we now have to keep improving in our remaining two group matches,” added Mkwasa.

At the Azam Complex Sudan defeated Rwanda 1-0 in the second Group A match of the day. After a defensive mix-up Monzer Abdo Khamies Tiya gave Sudan the lead after only six minutes.

The two teams continued to created several scoring opportunities, but Sudan held on to ensure they maintain their 100% winning run in the tournament after two matches.

Eric Nsimiyimana, the Rwanda coach said despite the defeat, his team had tried to play well. “We conceded because of a mistake and also did not take our chances. But we shall come back strongly in the remaining group matches,” added the former Rwandan International.

The Sudan coach Mohamed Ibrahim Awadalla Ali said he was happy that they made it two wins from two matches played. “We shall continue to keep working hard to get positive results because our target is to qualify for AFCON U-20 tournament,” he added.

The 2022 champions Uganda return to action on Wednesday in a Group B match against Burundi at the KMC Stadium, while South Sudan take on Ethiopia at the Azam Complex.
