Fountain Gate Dodoma qualify for semi-finals in CAF African Schools Championship
Tanzania’s Fountain Gate Dodoma Secondary School have qualified for the semi-final stage of the girls category of the 2022/2023 CAF African Schools Football Championship on-going in Durban, South Africa.
The CECAFA representatives kicked off their Group A encounter in style humbling South Africa’s Edendale Technical School 7-1 in a match played at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
Winfrida Hubert netted five goals, while Mary Siyane picked a brace as the Fountian Gate School team run rings around their South African opponents. Anele Douglas scored the consolation goal for Edendale Technical School.
Tanzania Football Federation President (TFF) and CECAFA President Wallace Karia was in the stands to cheer the Fountain Gate School team. South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Mr Zizi Kodwa, CAF Vice-Presidents Ahmed Yahya, Souleiman Hassan Waberi and Seidou Mbombo Njoya, COSAFA President Artur de Almeida e Silva and South African Football Association President Dr. Danny Jordaan were also in attendance.
The win sends Fountain Gate School straight to the semis before they play the second Group A match against Scan Aid from The Gambia.
In the second Group A match played Scan Aid and Ededale Technical School settled for a 1-1 draw. Ecole Omar IBN Khatab from Morocco also kick started their campaign with a 6-0 win against Anse Boileau (Sychelles) in a Group B encounter. Benin’s CEG Colby also stopped Anse Boileau 1-0. But the match between CEG Cobly and Ecole Omar IBN Khatab ended goalless.
In the boys category after picking a 1-1 draw against Salima Secondary (Malawi), South Africa’s Clapham High School defeated CEG Sainte Rita (Benin) 2-0.CEG Sainte Rita later picked a 2-0 win against Salima Secondary.
Royal Giants High from Uganda did not travel to South Africa by Wednesday because of visa challenges. The 2022/2023 CAF African Schools Football Championship will climax on April 8, 2023.
The teams in the girls and boys categories are vying to be crowned champions of Africa, but also for the USD 300,000 first prize in each competition. The Motsepe Foundation has donated USD 10-million to boost the competition in its inaugural year.
