Ethiopia, Tanzania triumph in 2020 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers
CECAFA representatives Ethiopia and Tanzania recorded wins in the first leg of the 2020 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. The Ethiopian team picked a shocking 5-0 win away to Bujumbura at the Prince Rwagasore Stadium.
Tanzania also fought from a goal down to beat Uganda 2-1 in a game played at the national Stadium in Dar es Salaam on Sunday.
Juliet Nalukenge gave Uganda the lead before Tanzania fought back to score through Diana Msewa and Clement Opa.
“We are happy that we got the home advantage and won the game. We need to continue working hard to be able to get a good result in Kampala,” said Tanzania’s coach Shime Bakari.
South Sudan making their first appearance in a FIFA World Cup qualifier in women’s football suffered a 5-0 defeat to Algeria in a game played in Kampala, Uganda on Sunday.
Algeria took a 3-0 first half lead through Hamideche Aicha, Bahiri Ikram and Khadidja Nefidsa. The determined Algerian team added two second half goals through Ganouche Ghada and Ghania Djemaa Ayadi.
In the other games played Sierra Leone lost at home 1-0 to Senegal, while Malawi settled for a 1-1 draw against visiting Zimbabwe. Botswana showed excellent form picking a 7-0 away win against Namibia.
