South Africa defeated Ethiopia 1-0 in a Group G match of the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifier played last night at the FNB Stadium.

It was an own goal by Getaneh Kebede early in the 11th minute that gave Bafana Bafana maximum points to keep top of the Group ahead of Ghana by a point.

The Ethiopians dominated play, but missed several scoring opportunities as the home side was forced to defend for long spells.

Ethiopia also had Mesud Mohamed’s long-range shot hit the cross bar, while South Africa’s goalkeeper Ronwen Williams save Kebede’s effort. The defeat and with two matches to be played in the group means Ethiopia is out for contention.

“It is unfortunate that we did not take the many scoring chances we created,” said Ethiopia’s coach Wubetu Abate.

South Africa lead the group with 10 points, while Ghana have 9 and Ethiopia 3. The Zimbabwe team that lost at home 3-1 to Ghana last evening are bottom of the log with 1 point.
