Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda teams arrive in Algeria
The three teams that will represent the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Zone have arrived in Algeria ahead of the start of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2022.
The competition that brings together players featuring in their domestic Leagues in their respective countries will run January 13th to February 4th.
The Uganda Cranes and the Sudan team that had camped in Tunisia arrived on Wednesday in Annaba and Constantine respectively. The Ethiopian team which has also been camping in Casablanca, Morocco for eight days jetted in Algiers yesterday.
Wubetu Abate, the Ethiopia head coach made it clear that camping in Morocco gave his team some quality time to fine tune well ahead of the start of the tournament. “It will be very important to make a good start in the tournament,” added Abate.
The Uganda Cranes coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic also said playing three friendly matches during their camp in Tunisia was good for the team ahead of the tournament. “We need to make sure we treat every match like a final,” added Sredojevic.
Uganda Cranes will be the first team from the CECAFA Zone to open their campaign when they face former champions DR Congo in a Group B match in Annaba on Saturday. Sudan will also be up against the defending champions Morocco in a Group C match at the Mohmed Hamlaoui Stadium in Constantine on Sunday.
The Ethiopian team will play their opening Group A match against Algeria on January 17th in Algiers.
In the friendly matches played during the preparations Uganda Cranes and Sudan settled for 2-2 draw, and Sredojevic’s team went on to draw 1-1 against Cameroon in the second match. Uganda settled for a goalless draw against Mali in the last warm-up match played in Tunisia.
Sudan also lost 2-0 to Cameroon, while Ethiopia suffered a 2-1 defeat to hosts Morocco in Casablanca.
