Ethiopia, Sudan to know AFCON 2021 opponents next month

The Council of East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) flag bearers Ethiopia and Sudan will know their opponents for the Total Africa Cup of Nations 2021 (AFCON) next month.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the draws for AFCON 2021 will take place in Yaounde, Cameroon on June 25th.

The competition which will attract 24 teams will take place January 9 to February 6th, 2022 in Cameroon. Ethiopia and Sudan qualified to carry the CECAFA flag at the competition which will bring the continent’s top football nations.

The last spot to decide which teams qualifies for the AFCON will be decided next month when Sierra Leone face Benin in a deciding group match.

Algeria are the defending champions after they won the title during the 2019 AFCON held in Egypt.

The 23 teams that have already qualified for the AFCON include; Algeria, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Comoros, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, Tunisia, Sudan and Zimbabwe.
