Hosts Ethiopia suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Ghana’s Black Princesses in the first leg of the final phase of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifier.

The visitors netted all the goals in the first half at the Bekila Stadium in Addis Ababa on Sunday.

Ethiopia started on a high trying to get an early lead, but the Ghana team defended well. Salamtu Abdulai gave the Black Princesses the lead after 29 minutes.

Abdulai netted her second of the day after 38 minutes, before Ceceila Nyama made it 3-0 after 44 minutes.

After recess the home team played a highly defensive approach, while Ethiopia tried to push forward to search for goals.

“ We are happy to win the first leg. Now we must prepare for the return leg,” said Ghana’s coach Baba Nuhu.

Firew Haile Gabriel, the Ethiopian head coach said that although he was disappointed with the defeat, they will work hard to prepare for the return leg in Ghana.

The winner over two legs will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup slated for Costa Rica in August 2022.
