Ethiopia ejects South Sudan in CHAN qualifiers

The Walia Ibex of Ethiopia have qualified for the final phase of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championships (CHAN) 2022 qualifiers.

Ethiopia stopped South Sudan 5-0 in a second leg tie of the first round played on Thursday at the neutral venue – Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

After settling for a goalless draw in the first leg few days ago, Coach Wubetu Abate’s team returned determined to win and qualify for the next round.

The Ethiopian team took a 2-0 half time lead with goals by Ramadan Yesuf and Amanuel Gebremichael.

In the second half Ethiopia continued to push forward before a South Sudan defender netted an own goal. Mesud Mohamed and Yegezu Bogale added two more goals to see Ethiopia qualify on a 5-0 goal aggregate.

Ethiopia will now face Rwanda in the final phase of the qualifiers with the first leg to take place next month and the return leg in September.

Today Burundi will face Djibouti in the second leg, while Tanzania battle Somalia on Saturday in the return legs of the CHAN qualifier. The Burundi team defeated Djibouti 2-1, while Taifa Stars edged Somalia 1-0 in the first leg matches played at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

The winner between Tanzania and Somalia will face Uganda Cranes, while Sudan awaits the winner between Burundi and Djibouti in the second round.

Algeria will host the CHAN tournament from January 8-31, 2023.
