Hosts Eritrea picked their first points in the on-going Cecafa U-15 Challenge Cup with a 6-0 thrashing of Sudan in a Group A game played at the Asmara National Stadium on Tuesday.

Eritrea took a first half 2-0 lead with goals from Tesfay Temesgen and Rezene Esrom.

The Sudan team tried to defend in numbers later in the second half but could not stop the home side from scoring more goals. Ahmed Awad later netted a hat-trick, while Temesgen also scored his second of the day. Eritrea who lost the first game 2-1 to Burundi are now third on the log with three points, while Kenya and Burundi each have seven points.

“I am happy with the way the boys played today. Winning by a big margin means we played attacking football,” said Eritrea’s coach Mekonen Zewde.

Sudan’s coach Mohamed Mousa Dawoud said his mission is not about winning but getting the boys to get the exposure. “We might suffer defeat by big margins, but the most important think is fo the players to get the experience,” added the Sudan coach

Ahmed Awad who received the match ball for scoring three goals said it is a day he will never forget. “This ball will mean a lot to me in my football career,” said the youngster.

On Wednesday South Sudan will battle Tanzania, before Ethiopia take on Rwanda in Group B matches.
