Eritrea have stopped Sudan 1-0 to finish third and win bronze at the 2019 Cecafa U-20 Challenge Cup. The depleted Eritrea side dominated the play-off match against Sudan at the Fufa Technical center in Njeru to score in the second half through Biniam Mengsteab after 67 minutes.

Sudan’s defenders were caught flat footed before Mengsteab slotted the low shot past the goalkeeper Mohamed Elnoor Adam.

Early in the first half Eritrea’s Ali Suleiman Ibrahim had his shot stopped, before Sudan’s Shihab Eldeen Siddiq Abdalrahman also had his attempt punched out of danger.

After a goalless first half the two teams came all out in search of a winning goal and Eritrea took their chance. With 2 added minutes Sudan scored, but the goal was canceled for off-side.

Sudan’s coach Mohamed Mousa said the referee did not handle the match well.

Haile Efrem Alemseghed, the Eritrean coach said he is happy his players have finished third. “We would have won the trophy if some players did not disappear from the Hotel,” added the coach.

Later the prize giving ceremony will take place after the final between Tanzania and Kenya’s Rising Stars. The regional tournament is sponsored by FIFA.
