DR Congo to feature in 2019 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup

The Democratic Republic of Congo will feature as guests in the 2019 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup to take place December 7-19th in Uganda. Nicholas Musonye, the Secretary General of the Council of the East and Central African Football Associations (Cecafa) said they are happy to have DR Congo as guests to spice up the tournament.

The guest team DR Congo were placed in Group B in the draws conducted at the Tiffany Diamond Hotels on Sunday afternoon. DR Congo who will use the tournament to prepare for the 2020 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) have been drawn against Sudan, South Sudan and Somalia.

Kenya’s Harambee Stars, the defending champions have been drawn alongside Tanzania, Dibouti and Zanzibar in Group C, while Uganda Cranes are in Group A alongside Burundi, Eritrea and Ethiopia.

“The best two teams from each group and the best two losses will make it to the quarter finals,” said Musonye. He thanked Uganda for accepting to organize three Cecafa tournaments this year.

Justus Mugisha, the Acting President of the Uganda FA said Uganda is ready to successfully host both the Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup and the Cecafa U-17 Women’s Challenge Cup.

In the draws for the Cecafa U-17 Women’s Challenge Cup also conducted in Dar es Salaam, hosts Uganda are placed alongside Ethiopia, Eritrea and South Sudan in Group A, while Group B has Tanzania, Burundi and Djibouti.

Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup groups (December 7-19)

Group A: Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea

Group B: DR Congo, Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia

Group C: Kenya, Tanzania, Djibouti, Zanzibar

Cecafa U-17 Women’s Championship (December 9-18)

Group A: Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan

Group B: Tanzania, Burundi, Djibouti
