Djibouti head coach Mette impressed with 10-day camp in Tunis

The head coach of Djibouti’s national team, Julien Mette has said the 10-day camp in Tunisia has benefited his team as they prepare for the qualifiers of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Djibouti’s team, The Shoremen of the Red Sea pitched camp in Tunis from March 22-31st and also had two friendly matches against Tunisia Premier League sides.

“ I am impressed and satisfied with the work my young team has put in during the 10-days of camping. I could see my 23 players getting minutes on the picth and also trying many options,” said Mette.

Mette who has been with the Djibouti national team for two years now said they they have decided to start early preparations ahead of the World Cup qualifiers.

In the two games against top Tunisian Premier League sides Djibouti lost 3-1 to Club Africian and 2-0 to CS Sfaxien. “I happy that the players had chance to play competitive matches and also had several days of training,” added the coach.

Djibouti who ejected Eswatini in the first round of the World Cup qualifiers will now battle in the second round against three other teams in Group A. The group has Djibouti, Burkina Faso, Niger and reigning African champions Algeria.

The coach also made it clear that he is impressed with the level of football development in Djibouti. “In the last two years several things like the League and the national teams have improved,” added Mette.

During the 2019 regional CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup the Djibouti team held Somalia to a goalless draw and defeated Burundi 2-1. They lost to Eritrea 3-0 and to the eventual champions Uganda 4-0 in the group stage.
