Azam Football Club and Uganda Premier League champions KCCA FC have stormed the semi final stage at the on-going CECAFA Kagame Club Championship in Rwanda.

The Tanzanian Premier League side shocked former CAF Champions League Champions TP Mazembe from DR Congo 2-1 in the first quarter final match played at the Kigali Stadium on Tuesday.

Giovanni Ipamy gave TP Mazembe the lead after 21 minutes before Selman Iddi made it 1-1 after 27 minutes. “I am glad that we are through to the next stage because we have won against a good side,” said Azam FC coach Etienne Ndayiragije after the game.

The two sides continued to create several scoring opportunities but failed to take them. Obrey Chirwa netted the defending champions second goal after 69 minutes.

KCCA FC also made sure they kept a 100% unbeaten record in the tournament after four games when they ejected home side Rayon Sports 2-1 in the second quarter final game.

Defender Musatafa Kizza scored the opening goal after 34 minutes with a hard shot that Rayon Sports goalkeeper Yves Kimenyi failed to stop. In the second half a hungry Rayon Sport side scored a quick goal to level matters through Herve Rugwiro after 48 minutes.

But coach Mike Hillary Mutebi’s side continued to press and were rewarded in the 66th minute with a Jackson Nunda header.

On Wednesday Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia FC will battle guest side Green Eagles FC from Zambia, while APR FC face AS Maniema in the other quarter final games.

The winner of the annual tournament will pocket US$30,000 in prize money, while the runners up will receive US$20,000 and the third placed US$10,000.
