Dates for AFCON 2023 qualifiers revised

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revised dates for the remaining rounds of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 qualifiers.

In a communication issued on July 31st, 2022 CAF pointed out that the Executive Committee approved the decision to give room for the five African representatives at the FIFA World Cup 2022 to prepare adequately.

“The Confederation of African Football Executive Committee has approved a revised TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 revised qualification calendar. This was necessitated by the Executive Committee’s commitment to make room for the African nations that have qualified for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 in November/ December 2022 to prepare adequately,” said the communication.

CAF stated that Match day three and four that were meant to be played in September 2022 will now be played March 20-28, 2023.

“Match day five will now be on June 12-20, 2023 while match day six will be played on September 4-12, 2023,” said CAF.

The development comes after CAF has also pushed the AFCON 2023 to be played instead in 2024 in Cote d’Ivoire.

The CECAFA teams battling in the AFCON 2023 qualifiers include; Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Rwanda.
