Hosts Uganda have completed top of Group A at the on-going CECAFA Senior Women’s Championship after a 4-1 win against Burundi.

The Crested Cranes fought from a goal down to defeat the Burundi team in a match played at the FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru.

Burundi took the lead after only 10 minutes through Falonne Nahimana after a defensive lapse by the Ugandan team.

But Coach George William Lutalo’s team did not give-up and continued to push forward in search of goals. After 14 minutes Fazila Ikwaput leveled matters for Uganda with a clean finish.

In the second half Burundi tried to push forward and try and get more goals, but the Ugandan defenders stood firm. Substitutes Shamirah Nalugya made it 2-1 for Uganda before Sandra Nabweteme added two more goals.

“This has been a very good performance. We now prepare for the semi final match to be played on Thursday between the team that finishes second in Group B,” said Lutalo.

Uganda started the campaign with a 2-0 win against Rwanda, stopped Djibouti 5-0 and now humbled Burundi 4-1.

In an earlier Group A match Rwanda stopped Djibouti 2-0. Anne Marie Ibangarye and Lydia Uzayisenza netted for the Rwanda team.

Rwanda coach Sosthene Habimana said he was happy that they take a win back home after they lost the first two matches to Uganda and Burundi. “This has been good exposure for our team and we are taking back good lessons,” said Habimana

On Monday the Group B matches will also be completed when South Sudan face Ethiopia, and Tanzania battle Zanzibar.
